Sample of animated short "Run, jump, sink, swim", recycled drawings animated in Flash , 2009

My art practice defines itself as a rich process of layering and recycling of content and form.

In 2002, I began a recycling project I called “Decomposition” with an entire portfolio (500+) of drawings. The intention of “Decompositon” was to break down the portfolio into basic material and to recast the paper pulp into new work. Though it took over a year to soak these drawings into a manageable pulp, there were still fragments that refused to break down. I extracted and saved these fragments and began layering them into short animated projects that re-use the ephemeral detritus from the drawing studio.

Above is a portion of the looped animated project titled “Run, Jump, Sink, Swim”. In this working animation, the characters, culled from the recycled portfolio project, run tirelessly along a landscape of producers and recyclers. During the night, their dreams carry on the work just as ferociously. This project will consider the question of work as well as the notion of fatigue.
